Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster’s reported romance has people outside the Broadway community trying to figure out when their working relationship might have become more intimate. Foster’s resurfaced interview from a July 2022 appearance on Live With Kelly and Ryan might offer more insight.
While the 49-year-old Broadway star was working with the 56-year-old actor on the Broadway revival of The Music Man, the duo started a pre-show ritual that they nicknamed “carpet chat.” Foster gushed, “We hang out in my dressing room before every show and just catch up. Somehow we ended up sitting … maybe because my dressing room’s a mess, we sit on the carpet.”
Describing it as a “wonderful thing,” the private moments brought them closer as co-workers. “We’ve become really good friends, and we just talk and catch up on our day,” Foster added. “That’s been one of the best parts of the whole thing, that I’ve made this wonderful new friend.”
Jackman played Professor Harold Hill and Foster played his romantic muse Marian Paroo in the show that ran on Broadway from December 2021 to January 2023. In September 2023, Jackman and his wife of 27 years Deborra-Lee Furness announced their separation. Foster has since filed for divorce from her husband of 10 years, Ted Griffin, and sold her New York home in May for $2 million, per Realtor.com.
Their affair was allegedly an “open secret on Broadway,” according to an In Touch Weekly source. “[Sutton and Hugh] have been inseparable,” the insider added. “Everyone in the theater world has seen the chemistry between them. It was only a matter of time before the truth came out.”
Jackman nor Foster have commented on the affair allegations, but Furness reportedly had “suspicions” about her husband and his co-star. Their relationship is not a secret to her,” a Daily Mail source noted. “Deborra-Lee wants to be left out of this narrative. She is not going to address this or speak against Hugh. When they divorced, they agreed to keep everything that happened during their marriage private.”
It’s only a matter of time before the paparazzi find a way to spot Jackman and Foster together.
